Planning your next visit? We've hand-picked 10 must-see things for a great day out.

1. See railway legends up close

As you enter Great Hall you'll be greeted by a stunning array of railway vehicles. Feast your eyes on Mallard, a masterpiece of design that could cut through the air at a record 126mph. Check out the swooping aerodynamics of the technology-packed Eurostar power car. And don't forget Duchess of Hamilton, a brutal powerhouse of a machine cloaked in elegant art deco bodywork.

2. Try the Flying Scotsman VR Experience

VR Flying Scotsman

It's the world's most famous steam locomotive, now over 100 years old. Be immersed in the world of Flying Scotsman with our VR Experience, which will even give you a toasty feeling as you venture inside the firebox.

3. See inside Shinkansen

Japanese bullet train

Step inside the only Japanese bullet train that's not in Japan! This beautiful Series 0 Shinkansen from the 1960s was completely restored before leaving its home country. Find out all about Japan's railway revolution as you marvel at this intriguingly innovative locomotive.

4. Experience the extraordinary in Wonderlab

A wide view of lots of people in Wonderlab

Hands-on challenges and live experiments make engineering principles come to life in Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery. This new space is a must-do for families looking for an educational and fun day out. Where else can you learn about aerodynamics, launch a rocket and hold fire?

5. See what's running on the Model Railway

We love trains of all sizes. Every day in Great Hall you'll see something different making its way around our model layout, lovingly looked after by our volunteers. What will you spot?

6. Get a good view from the Viewing Balcony

See railways for real from our viewing balcony at the back of North Shed. You'll see live passenger and freight trains in action as they enter and depart York Railway Station. There's also an interesting display about signalling.

7. Discover unexpected stories

For every Mallard and Duchess there's a Coppernob and Bauxite. These locos might not be as glamorous, but they still have rich and interesting histories. Coppernob bears the scars of damage sustained during a Second-World-War bombing raid, while Bauxite exhibits rustic repairs and evidence of a hard working life. Discover all these and more as you explore Great Hall and North Shed.

8. Ride on the Road Train

The road train passes York's city walls

The railway fun doesn't stop when you leave the museum. Our road train runs regular trips between York Minster and the museum, it's a great way to get about! See the full timetable.

9. Explore North Shed

A warehouse full of railway objects

You will not believe how many objects are in North Shed. Models, silverware, signs, sculptures, the list goes on. What treasures will you find?

10. See signalling in action

Lancashire and Yorkshire signalling school

Inside North Shed is the Lancashire & Yorkshire Signalling School. Our volunteers run a full demonstration every month, re-creating a noteworthy railway accident with authentic period signalling instruments. Browse demonstration dates.
