National Railway Museum

Enjoy a great day out with stimulating science-packed shows and games, a new outdoor play area and a fresh summer menu.

This summer you're in for a fun and varied family day out at our big museum—we've got loads for you to see and do.

Enjoy our most popular shows alongside hands-on activities that challenge you to invent new solutions to age-old problems by thinking outside the box and asking big questions. Here are some highlights...

In A Simple Machine see what's involved in completing a basic task with an overcomplicated machine. You'll learn about how it works before creating a curious contraption of your own.

Find the best way to get from A to B in Screwball Signals and design your own carriage and use renewable energy to power it in Passenger Puzzle.

Need to blow off some steam? Head over to our new outdoor play area with a challenging rope climb and monkey bars.

Fresh for summer

Few things in life are as welcome as the sight of ice cream on a hot summer's day. We're now serving bold flavours from our new supplier Northern Bloc to bring sweet relief in the sunshine.

Don't forget to refuel with a taste of our new summer restaurant menu, available from Sunday 21 July.

This summer you can also book your place on a Family Hosting session. This is an experiment to find a whole new way to volunteer at the museum.

The classics

It wouldn't be a trip to the National Railway Museum without a noisy, smoky Steam Ride or a rumble along our Miniature Railway. There's also the super-speedy Mallard Experience and the Road Train to take you to and from York Minster.
