Untold Stories: Bringing Together Oral Histories of Britain’s Railways

Share best practice in collecting railway oral histories in this one-day workshop.

Are you thinking of collecting oral histories relating to railways?

Do you have oral history recordings and want to learn more?

Interested in lost stories from Britain’s oral history?

Are you already involved—or simply interested in railway history?

This one-day workshop hosted by the National Railway Museum and the University of Leicester will provide an opportunity to share best practice in collecting railway oral histories, improve awareness of existing collections, and explore the potential contribution of railway oral histories to wider social histories as well as railways themselves.

There will be opportunities to meet leading practitioners and historians from the museum and heritage railway organisations from across the UK.

Aspects to be considered will include:

  • Who is currently doing what? Many people are collecting railway oral histories, but there is no easy way of keeping track of their subject matter, location and availability to the public
  • What collections already exist, what do they cover, and how can we access them?
  • Good practice in collecting railway oral histories – and some things to avoid
  • How can railway oral histories contribute to other aspects of social history such as family life in a railway environment, the nature and experience of women’s work, or business history?
  • Where do we go from here? What opportunities are there for future research and collaboration

These questions will be explored through presentations, demonstrations and case studies, panel discussions, and a poster display. The emphasis of the workshop is on the practical aspects of collecting and using oral history, and it will also provide opportunities for informal networking.
