The museum is only a few minutes’ walk from York station and the route is signposted:
- Turn left outside the front of the station
- Pass the Principal Hotel and turn left into Leeman Road
- Continue through the tunnel; the museum is straight ahead
There is also a direct route to the museum via the station footbridge, although this is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
The Service 59 Poppleton Bar Park and Ride bus picks up and drops off on Leeman Road. For more information, visit the First Group Park and Ride website.
First's Number 10 bus also passes by the museum. Visit the First website to plan your journey.

Bicycle racks are available. Bikes are left at the owner’s risk.
The museum is a 10-minute walk from the centre of town, and the route is well signposted.
The museum is clearly signposted from all approaches to the city.
Accessible parking for blue badge holders is free and is located in the main car park. The distance from the blue badge spaces to the museum entrance is approximately 200m. There is a traffic island to assist you in crossing Leeman Road.”
Our visitor car park is on Leeman Road, a short walk away from the main entrance on the other side of the road and costs £10 per day. Tokens for the visitor car park can be purchased in the museum. The car park closes at 6.30pm.
Please note, the National Railway Museum’s car park offers limited parking and often reaches capacity by 11.00 during weekends and holiday periods.
If you require alternative parking, the nearest long-stay car park to the museum is Marygate car park, which is a 10-15 minute walk from the museum over Scarborough bridge. There are a number of other long stay car parks within York, which you can view here.
York’s inner-city car parks often fill up quickly during peak periods. An alternative option is to use one of the several out-of-town Park and Ride car parks and take a bus into the city.
