Stephenson's Rocket – Schools

Discover how a steam engine works and find out the amazing story of how Rocket became one of the most famous engines of all time.

Stephenson's Rocket was the most cutting edge steam engine of its day and created a template for all engines that came after it. In this interactive workshop your students will work scientifically to discover what made its design better than its competitors and how Rocket works.

Continue the session by visiting our sectioned steam engine Ellerman Lines in Great Hall and discover how the principles students have learned apply to a larger and newer engine.

Did you know?

The real Rocket is currently on display in our Brass, Steel and Fire exhibition in Station Hall. Be sure to visit the exhibition and see the steam engine that inspired your workshop.
