Find out everything you need to plan and book a learning visit to the National Railway Museum.

Opening times

We are open daily 10.00–18.00 (10.00–17.00 October – February) and closed 24–26 December. Any changes will be listed on our Visit page.

Preliminary visits

We strongly recommend a preliminary visit to familiarise yourself with the galleries and plan your routes around the museum.


All groups should enter the museum via the main entrance. Please note the Leeman Road entrance is longer in use as it is for conference guests only. Please see the teachers map for the coach drop off point and main entrance. On arrival, groups will be directed to the Schools Meet and Greet area in Station Hall.

Admission costs

Entry to the museum is free, but charges apply for some activities. See the Schools Programme page for details.

The Mallard Experience simulator and Miniature Railway are available at a discounted cost for schools and youth groups. Please state at the time of booking so we can coordinate your visit.

If you're running late

If you are running late, please let us know as soon as possible on 01904 686 230 and we will do our best to rearrange your itinerary. This is not always possible and your school or organisation will remain liable for the cost if you miss a charged activity.

Admission to the museum is free but charges apply for some activities.

When you make a booking to visit the National Railway Museum we will send you a confirmation letter showing your visit itinerary, and a pro-forma invoice showing the amount due for any charged activities that you have asked us to include.
